Rivers APC opens two parallel secretariats

A gaping sore festering in the heart of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has further deepened with the opening of two parallel party secretariats in Port Harcourt.

A faction of the party loyal to a governorship aspirant, Senator Magnus Abe, which had claimed marginalisation, said the parallel party office located along Aba-Port Harcourt Road, will be a symbol of cohesiveness.

APC factional chairman, Peter Odike, while addressing hundreds of party members at the parallel party office that was attacked penultimate Saturday by hoodlums, urged them to look beyond the skirmishes and individual differences, which has characterised the party and that tended to polarise members in the past months.

Odike explained that in the view of a subsisting court order that the status quo be maintained in all the executive and working committees of the party at all levels in the State, all members of the State, local government area, ward and unit executive and working committees to immediately return to the fold and see the new secretariat as the authentic administrative headquarters of the APC in Rivers state.

Present at the official opening of the parallel secretariat were senator Abe, who represents Rivers South East Senatorial District; the lawmaker representing Emohua/Ikwerre Federal Constituency, Chidi Wihioka; Senator Wilson Ake, former Chief of Staff to Governor Chibuike Amaechi; Tony Okocha, former Rivers state Attorney General and Commissioner for justice, Worgu Boms and other. But in a swift reaction, a faction of the party loyal to the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, which had earlier opened its secretariat on the same Aba-Port Harcourt Road, maintained that the party is not fragmented.

Its spokesperson, Chris Finebone, argued that APC in Rivers State is not in factions and there is no basis to even conjecture that the party will ever get to that situation. To buttress this, he pointed out that there were no parallel congresses of the party in Rivers State, from the 319 Wards, 23 councils Congresses to the State Congress.

Finebone said the party believes that with primaries drawing near, many aspirants to various offices under the APC are already erecting campaign offices in pursuance of their aspirations and no one can possibly fault that.

“However, it must be stated that, given the possibility that some human beings may sometimes decide to act in unconscionable manner, should any attempt be made by anyone or group of persons to cause mischief by deliberately naming their campaign office as Rivers State APC Secretariat, the leadership of APC will take deliberate steps (within the ambit of the law) to ensure that such malfeasance does not succeed” he said.He insisted that Rivers APC is one under the leadership of the Minister of Transportation, Amaechi and Mr. Ojukaye Fla-Amachree as State Chairman.
