We were spoilt for sporting action this weekend.

There were some huge Premier League clashes and a world heavyweight title fight, as well as numerous other events across the globe.

Manchester United stun Manchester City in the derby

City suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United on Saturday as Liverpool went 14 points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men, having won 3-0 at Bournemouth earlier in the day.

City have won back-to-back titles under Guardiola but it appears to finally be Liverpool’s year with Jurgen Klopp’s side so far ahead at the top. Only Leicester, eight points behind in second, look like they could pose a threat to the Reds right now.

Guardiola conceded after the derby defeat that is ‘not realistic’ for City to think about catching Liverpool.

When asked about the gap to Liverpool, he said: “It is not time to think about that.

“We think about what we have to do and the next game – it is not realistic to think about catching up.

“Obviously it is so difficult because the opponents have had 16 games with 15 victories and they are on an incredible run and sometimes we have dropped points. But our duty, and what you have to do, is continue.

“We have to try to continue. There are many things to play for.”

Luis Suarez wows with amazing back heel goal

Despite turning 33 next month, Suarez remains one of the world’s best strikers – and Saturday night was just another example why.

With Barcelona cruising at 3-1 against Mallorca, Suarez completed an outstanding team goal with a superb back-heel after latching on to a Frenkie de Jong pass.

It was the Uruguay international’s eighth LaLiga goal of the season and may well prove to be his best.

Lionel Messi scores another hat-trick to break Cristiano Ronaldo’s LaLiga record

While Suarez’s back-heel was sublime, his Barcelona teammate Messi – as ever – stole the show against Mallorca.

The Argentine superstar recently won the Ballon d’Or for the sixth time, with Ronaldo, a five-time winner, coming third in the voting behind Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk last week.

And Messi piped Ronaldo to another record with a hat-trick against Mallorca in the 5-2 win.

It was his 35th LaLiga treble, overtaking Ronaldo’s tally of hat-tricks in Spain.

Now Joshua has two mandatory defenses at his feet, as the IBF want him to face Kubrat Pulev and the WBO ordered him to fight Oleksandr Usyk. IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua would love to get the opportunity to face WBC champion Deontay Wilder and unbeaten Tyson Fury.

Anthony Joshua sets up Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury showdown

Joshua answered his critics by beating Andy Ruiz Jr to reclaim his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles in Saudi Arabia.

It wasn’t the prettiest fight, but AJ was in control throughout and won by unanimous decision as he outboxed the Mexican, who had secured a shock win over the Brit at Madison Square Garden six months ago.

Ruiz now wants a third crack at Joshua in the future, although it is likely the 30-year-old will have bigger fish to fry – with Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury likely to be in his sights in 2020.

It’s set to be a cracker of a heavyweight division next year as that trio battle for supremacy.

Dillian Whyte cleared of all wrongdoing by UKAD

Whyte’s reputation was on the line after it was reported, but not confirmed due to confidentiality rules, that he had returned an adverse finding in a doping test three days after his victory over Oscar Rivas in July.

However, UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) dropped their charge against him following a lengthy investigation and cleared him of any wrongdoing.

And Whyte celebrated the news in style by beating Mariusz Wach on the Joshua vs Ruiz undercard on his return to the ring.

Whyte tweeted: “For those who believed in me I won’t forget you. To those who didn’t, I won’t forgive you and I know who you are

Jamie Vardy edged closer to breaking his own record

Vardy broke Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of goals in consecutive league games when he scored in 11 matches in a row during Leicester’s fairytale title-winning 2015/16 campaign.

And he could even break his own record after scoring for the eighth consecutive league game in the Foxes’ 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Vardy netted his 15th and 16th Premier League goals of the season as Leicester maintained their unlikely chase of Liverpool.

Vardy has a good chance of continuing his goalscoring form against relegation-threatened Norwich next weekend, before huge clashes with Man City and leaders Liverpool.

Duncan Ferguson’s incredible passion in Everton’s win over Chelsea

Club legend Ferguson was placed in temporary charge of Everton’s first-team following the sacking of Marco Silva last week.

And his reign got off to a perfect start with a 3-1 win over top-four hopefuls Chelsea.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second goal six minutes from time put the game to bed, and sent an ecstatic Ferguson running down the touchline as he hugged not one but two ball boys.

Ferguson played for Everton between 2000 and 2006 and could even make a case for the permanent job if he picks up more wins. The fans certainly loved his passion.
