Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is only one Champions League trophy away from equalling current record holder Francisco Gento.

The 35-year-old Portuguese forward has built an incredible legacy in Europe’s elite club competition and is the outright top scorer in the Champions League.

And Ronaldo has captured five Champions League titles across his illustrious playing career, four of which came during his time at Real Madrid.

Goal compiled a table featuring the players who have won UEFA’s top-tier tournament the most times in history.

Ronaldo is amongst several star names to have won the Champions League five times, which also includes AC Milan icon Paolo Maldini and Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano.

Former Los Blancos winger Gento sits alone at the top of the pile with six, all of which came across two different decades.

Ronaldo’s five Champions League wins — one of which came with Manchester United in 2008 — puts him one ahead of fierce rival Lionel Messi.

Other standout names in the list include the legendary Johan Cruyff (three), Franz Beckenbauer (three), Xavi (four) and Andres Iniesta (four).

Posted below are the players who have won the Champions League the most times in history.

Ronaldo has previously claimed that his Champions League success with two different clubs is what separates him from Barcelona superstar Messi.

“The difference with Messi is that I played for several clubs and won the Champions League with different clubs,” the Portugal captain told DAZN in 2019.

“I was top scorer in the Champions League six seasons in a row. There aren’t many players who won five Champions League trophies, so this is why I feel that I can identify myself with this tournament.

“Messi is an excellent player who will be remembered not just for his Ballon d’Or wins, but also for having improved — like me — year after year.

“I wake up every morning with the idea in my head of training with the objective of achieving something more, not just to earn money.

“Thank God, I don’t lack money, so what I want to earn is a place in the history of football.”
