The twists and turns that have characterized John Obi Mikel’s transfer is getting clearer after Serie A’s newly promoted team Benevento declared their interest to sign on the former Chelsea legend.

Gianlucadimarzio.com reported that the club is showing no sign of slowing down in the transfer market this summer in its on-going effort to beef up the squad with tested and quality players.

Towards this end, the club has made an inquiry for Juan Iturbe, currently a free agent after his latest stint at Pachuca with an option of Obi Michel, who is also a free agent after his one season at Trabzonspor.

Brazilian Serie A side, Botafogo, had led the race to clinch the signing of former Nigeria captain back in April this year.

Globo Esporte says the Rio de Janeiro club turned their attention to Mikel after failing to agree on a deal with Manchester City legend, Yaya Toure.

The Chelsea icon was pleased with the approach from Botafogo but talks broke down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mexican clubs C.F. Monterrey and Tigres UANL also entered the race to sign him too.

The 32-year-old was an important player at Trabzonspor, making 19 league appearances and helping them to the top of the standings before the Super Lig was postponed by the Turkish Federation.

The former Plateau United man made 91 appearances for the Super Eagles and led Nigeria to her third AFCON title in 2013.
