Victor Moses’ Russian club Spartak Moscow has reacted to be excluded from this season’s Europa League, following the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s administration.

Spartak Moscow are billed to take on German club RB Leipzig in the Europa League round of 16.

But the invasion of Ukraine which is now in its fifth day, has seen Russia come under sanctions.

And on Monday in a statement, both UEFA and FIFA suspended all Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions.

The announcement read in part: “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.”

And reacting to the suspension Spartak Moscow, on their Twitter handle, described it as upsetting.

“The decision to exclude our team from Europa League is upsetting.

“We believe that sport, even in the most difficult times, should aim to build bridges, and not burn them.

“We will focus on domestic competitions and hope for a speedy achievement of peace that everybody needs.“
