Varane Concussions Have Taken Toll on My Body, Says Manchester United Defender

Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane says that he feels his body has suffered “damage” due to what he believes are multiple concussions sustained over his career.

The 30-year-old Varane cited instances when he played shortly after experiencing a concussion, such as during the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup where France was defeated 0-1 by Germany, and while playing for his former club Real Madrid against Manchester City in the round of 16 of the 2020 Champions League.

The ex-French international expressed that he endangered himself by facing Germany just days after sustaining a head injury during a match against Nigeria. He mentioned that the staff were uncertain about his readiness to play.

The soccer star further mentioned his reluctance to discuss the repercussions of head injuries throughout the years, as he didn’t wish to attribute them as “excuses” for his performance. He emphasized that he doesn’t “blame the doctors” for this. Varane stressed the importance of raising awareness about how to recognize and address head injuries, noting that players might feel vulnerable if they admit feeling unwell.
