Weather: Snow causes widespread disruption and school closures

Nearly 300 schools are closed across Wales due to heavy snow which has caused widespread disruption and cut off rural communities.

The Met Office upgraded its weather warning to amber, running from midday Thursday until 09:00 on Friday.

Bus services were cancelled in Wrexham and roads closed in Denbighshire.

Schools are closed across Wrexham, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Powys, Blaenau Gwent, Gwynedd, Torfaen and Caerphilly.

It comes after about 10cm (4in) of snow fell on Wednesday.

There are 235 schools closed alone across north Wales on Thursday.

More than 200 schools were closed on Wednesday after heavy snow fell in south, west and mid Wales.

The Met Office said heavy snow is likely to cause significant disruption. The amber warning affects Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Powys and Wrexham.

BBC weather presenter Sabrina Lee said the affected areas could see 10-20cm (4-8in) of snow, with a chance of up to 30cm (12in) on higher ground.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is also in place for 10 of Wales’ local authority areas until 14:00 GMT on Friday.

This covers Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Monmouthshire, Powys and Wrexham.

Anglesey County Council leader Llinos Medi told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast that gritters had been out overnight on the island.

It was important during the day that carers could get out to rural areas, she said. She urged people to check on vulnerable neighbours.

The Met Office warns vehicles could become stranded on roads, with rail services cancelled and possible power cuts.

The mountain road between Heol y Glo and Llangynwyd in Bridgend is impassable at points because of heavy snowfall.

In north Wales, roads including the A44 between Ponterwyd and Llangurig, the A525 Heol Maelor and the A5 in Llangollen, Denbighshire have been closed.

Bus services have also been affected, with Arriva Buses Wales saying all services in Wrexham have been suspended until further notice.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has also issued a flood warning for the Llŷn Peninsula and Cardigan Bay coastline.

Flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected, NRW said. It warned people to be careful on beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, roads, low lying land and estuaries as sea spray and waves could be dangerous and could contain debris.

Flood alerts are also in place for the Carmarthenshire coast, with a risk of flooding around the high tide on Thursday evening.

In Ceredigion, a flood alert has been issued for the stretch of coast between Clarach and Cardigan for Thursday evening.

BBC weather presenter Sabrina Lee expected large parts of the country to have seen around 2-4cm (about 1-2in) of snow at low levels.

That will be closer to 5-10cm (2-4in) where you have some elevation, she said.

Over some of Wales’ higher ground such as the Brecon Beacons and Monmouthshire, people could even see up to 20cm (8in) of snow.
