What Amnesty International Said About Army, Shi’ites’ Clash

Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the attacks by the Nigerian Army on members of the Islamic Movement who were on a religious procession of Arbaeen in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The foremost rights body made its displeasure known in a series of tweets on its Twitter handle on Monday.

Recall that a clash between the army and IMN, which left no fewer than three people dead, erupted over the weekend in Zuba District of Abuja.

Reacting, AI decried army’s use of force on civilian protesters, describing the attacks as needless and unacceptable.

The tweets read: “Amnesty International condemns soldiers’ deadly use of force on support of Islamic movement in Nigeria, IMN, during a religious procession in Zuba, near Abuja. This is a reckless tactic that resulted in fatalities. .

“Needless and increasingly frequent resort to violence by Nigeria army against supporters of IMN is unacceptable. In Dec. 2015 soldiers killed over 347 IMN supporters in Zaria. Upto now no one has been brought to justice for this murder of unarmed women, children and boys.”
