Witchcraft In African Football, Could This Be True Let's Look At Some Facts!

Witchcraft and African Football! Could It Be True? Let’s look at some Facts!

Witchcraft is deeply rooted in African culture.  These beliefs have been carried through generations and generations. Tribal leaders and Sangomas play a big part in keeping this traditional belief alive even in today’s modern society.  The application of witchcraft is applied over every aspect of African people’s lives.  From relationships, to prosperity and even football! They use the practice of witchcraft to bring luck to their team in order to play well and win.

Many western cultures believe it to be unreal but to the African community it is completely alive. There are many stories and examples of witchcraft not to mention how it has been used in the football arena!

Here are some fun and interesting stories for you to read!

Witchcraft at the African Cup of Nations

The African Cup of Nations is a heralded event amongst fervent football followers on the continent. So it seems likely that this would be the best place to apply a little witchcraft to get your team to perform better and reach as high as they can in the tournament. The 2008 tournament is a good example of the use of a little juju magic.

The tournament kicked off with a match between Ghana and Guinea.  Players from Ghana were seen toting a juju pot with them.  Apparently this keeps away bad spirits and is sure to improve their game! True or not, Ghana did win the match when Sulley Muntari scored a last minute goal!

2000 was another reminder of the power of witchcraft in Africa and its football events. When Nigeria took on Senegal the Nigerian Football Association insisted on going on the pitch to take off, what they believed to be a lucky charm in the Senagalese goal area.

Again in 2002 witchcraft reared its head. The Mali – Cameroon fixture was canceled surrounding unusual circumstances: Cameroon’s goalkeeping coach was arrested for bewitching the pitch.

Rwandan Premier League forced to Rule Out Witchcraft

The Rwandan Premier League officials ruled out the allowance of using witchcraft in their league.  This was the result of an incident in 2016 when strikers Mukura Victory and Rayon Sports were going head to head in a game.  However, the one striker was believed to have placed a lucky charm at the goal of the opposition, only to go on to score. This caused an uproar leading to the ban.

Now teams that include witchcraft will be penalized for using witchcraft to enhance their game or dampen the performance of the opposing team. Clubs involved in witchcraft will lose three points and also receive a fine of 2,9 million RWF.

World Cup Witchcraft!

While the western world proclaims to not believe in witchcraft, Emmanuel Petit may disagree. When playing Senegal in the 2002 World Cup group stage, he believes the African team applied witchcraft to get the french team kicked out.  He also claimed to have proof.

He was quoted saying that a street vendor had predicted the outcome and said it would be due to some form of witchcraft. As predicted Senegal unexpectedly beat France 1 – 0. Although France were seen to be the much stronger team, in this particular game incredible things happened such as several near misses that should easily have gone in.
