Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State, clarified on Friday the dispute surrounding his relationship with Usman Ododo, the APC’s candidate for governor on November 11th, by stating that they are not related.

Contrary to what the opposing political parties in the state have claimed, the governor asserts that he is not related by blood to the candidate who won a hotly contested, free, and fair election on the basis of merit.

The state had been held back for 19 years by ethnic emotions, he added, so “we must break away from that for competence.”

The APC governorship candidate has been accused of being his cousin, an allegation that has sparked harsh criticism from Kogites and the opposition.

Speaking in response to claims that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for the Kogi Central Senate seat in the 2023 National Assembly election, had her campaign offices destroyed, the governor said the APC candidate was still the most well-liked and would therefore refrain from any actions that might tarnish the election.
