Any player who chooses to sit out when the NBA resumes play must inform their team by June 24, sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
A player who voluntarily declines to play would reportedly lose roughly 1.1% of their salary for each game missed. Beyond the forfeiture of salary, players would not be disciplined for sitting out, according to Charania.
Two groups of players would be exempt from salary reductions: “protected players” and “excused players,” the latter group being those deemed to be of a higher risk of illness, Charania reports. Excused players will reportedly have until June 25 to opt out.
